Are you, or the child or young person in your life looking for something different over the coming weekends? You can channel your inner creator at a wildlife paper mâché workshop this month.
The Earth Day Grey Bruce 22 Planning Committee is inviting everybody to a celebration of Earth Day on April 23 from 2-5 pm at the Owen Sound Farmers Market. The event will feature a Market Gathering of local resources for greener living and climate action, activities and entertainment for children and youth, a parade, ending with live musical performances by Coco Love Alcorn and Drew McIver, as well as a dance. The goal is to celebrate Earth Day with a community event that energizes us all to take climate change action, including mitigation, adaptation, and justice.
In preparation for the event, Earth Day Grey Bruce, and Footholds local artist Hester Koopman, are holding a series of art-making workshops in the lead up to Earth Day 22. Children and youth from across Grey Bruce, along with their parents, guardians or mentors, are invited to join them in preparing wild animal figures and masks and for the Earth Day Parade. The parade will celebrate everything they want to protect, with a focus on wildlife.
Two art workshops will be held on Sundays, March 6 and 13, from 1 pm - 4 pm, at the Harmony Centre in Owen Sound, located at 890 4th Ave East (Entrance on 9th St East). The workshop is free, but donations to the Harmony Centre are encouraged, where possible, for use of the space.
Paper mâché instruction and materials will be provided. Participants are encouraged to supplement with cardboard, newspaper, paper bags and recycled or repurposed materials.
The event will follow public health guidelines.
Projects can be individual or joint, and participants are encouraged to showcase their creations at the Earth Day parade. Event organizer Noëlle Rancourt said, “This is about building a community of action and celebration around climate action and care for the earth.”
For workshop details, see the Facebook Event. To register for the workshops, email earthdaygb22@gmail.com with 'Paper Mâché' in the subject line, along with the number of participants.
Donations to the Earth Day event are welcome and will go towards covering costs of entertainment and facilities.
The Earth Day Grey Bruce 22 Planning Committee looks forward to creating art with you!
At South Grey News, we endeavour to bring you truthful and factual, up-to-date local community news in a quick and easy-to-digest format that’s free of political bias. We believe this service is more important today than ever before, as social media has given rise to misinformation, largely unchecked by big corporations who put profits ahead of their responsibilities.
South Grey News does not have the resources of a big corporation. We are a small, locally owned-and-operated organization. Research, analysis and physical attendance at public meetings and community events requires considerable effort. But contributions from readers and advertisers, however big or small, go a long way to helping us deliver positive, open and honest journalism for this community.
Please consider supporting South Grey News with a donation in lieu of a subscription fee and let us know that our efforts are appreciated. Thank you.
