The West Grey Public Library is ready to welcome you this summer, no matter what your interests are.
The Library’s biggest children’s event of the year, the TD Summer Reading Club, gets underway this month, starting with Get Your Summer Read On Day on Tuesday, June 14.
The goal this year is for Reading Club youth to read 1,000 books by the end of the summer.
New this year: every child who participates in the Summer Reading Club can enter to win a Yoto player! This sturdy, screen-free audio player is designed for kids and uses plastic cards to read audiobooks and other child-friendly materials.
And there are two can’t-miss events for kids during June. For the younger set (ages 0-6+), there’s a Touch-A-Truck program on Saturday, June 18 from 11:00 am - 2:00 pm at the Durham Community Centre and Arena. Trucks, tractors, construction vehicles, race cars and more! Register on Eventbrite.
On Friday, June 24, from 7:00pm - 8:00pm, kids 4+ can be part of a historical battle re-enactment from medieval times, with demos of swords, shields, spears and more! Knights in the Classroom Show, also at the Durham Community Centre & Arena. Register on Eventbrite.
With Durham’s Homecoming on the near horizon, the Library is bustling with plans.
Staff have prepared a self-guided historical tour of Durham, and will be participating in the Parade on Saturday, July 2. Visit them from 10 am to 12 pm in Vicker’s Park at the riverside Pavilion (behind Chicory Common) before the Parade gets underway.
And for those in search of quieter pursuits, this month offers a flower-pressing workshop with Twig & Brindille, a ZOOM presentation on Ontario’s birds (rescheduled from May), our Roaming Readers, Cardmaking with Bonnie, take-and-make crafts and a Master Gardeners’ presentation, also on ZOOM, on Culinary Herbs. Pre-registration for adult programs required: adultprograms@westgreylibrary.com. Something for everyone!
At South Grey News, we endeavour to bring you truthful and factual, up-to-date local community news in a quick and easy-to-digest format that’s free of political bias. We believe this service is more important today than ever before, as social media has given rise to misinformation, largely unchecked by big corporations who put profits ahead of their responsibilities.
South Grey News does not have the resources of a big corporation. We are a small, locally owned-and-operated organization. Research, analysis and physical attendance at public meetings and community events requires considerable effort. But contributions from readers and advertisers, however big or small, go a long way to helping us deliver positive, open and honest journalism for this community.
Please consider supporting South Grey News with a donation in lieu of a subscription fee and let us know that our efforts are appreciated. Thank you.
