The official opening of the West Grey Community Garden and orchard in Durham at the corner of Station and Saddler Streets took place on July 3.

The community came together including the Municipality of West Grey, volunteers, and the West Grey Fire.

The garden has raised wooden beds and large repurposed pots planted with vegetables for the community and for individual gardeners, which will be marked with signage.

The orchard is planted with 25 fruit trees, including apple, cherry and pear. A grant was received by Trees Canada which enabled the purchase of the trees.

Mulch for the fruit trees was donated by Jennifer Osborn of Eco Wool, and many hours donated by Jennifer Hodge Williamson of Jen's Garden Solutions.

"The gardens are here for the community. Take advantage of it", said Kevin Eccles mayor of West Grey.

Beds and areas marked community are open to anyone in need. They only ask that you take only what you can use and respectfully leave some for others. Produce is donated to the local food bank.

The original community garden was located across the street where the dog park is now. The ground and location was not suitable for the fruit trees and the decision was made to move it to the current location 3 years ago.

This is the first growing season of the gardens.

At South Grey News, we endeavour to bring you truthful and factual, up-to-date local community news in a quick and easy-to-digest format that’s free of political bias. We believe this service is more important today than ever before, as social media has given rise to misinformation, largely unchecked by big corporations who put profits ahead of their responsibilities.

South Grey News does not have the resources of a big corporation. We are a small, locally owned-and-operated organization. Research, analysis and physical attendance at public meetings and community events requires considerable effort. But contributions from readers and advertisers, however big or small, go a long way to helping us deliver positive, open and honest journalism for this community.
