Cenotaphs in Dundalk and Holstein

BY SOUTHGREY.CA STAFF — Remembrance Day events were held across the region on Monday, November 11, many of them under typical cold and rainy conditions.

In Kimberley, however, attendees were spared from the weather, gathering in the warm and welcoming environment of the Kimberley Community Hall. The Kimberley Community Association (KCA) hosted a quiet and respectful ceremony which featured music from Jon Zaslow and John Hotson, readings from Eileen McPhail, Ray MacDonald, Lynn Silverton, Peter French and Lynne Brewer French. KCA president Carlos Mogul brought greetings from the group and wreaths were laid on behalf of the Government of Canada, Province of Ontario, Municipality of Grey Highlands, KCA and Hutchinson Family.

Outdoor ceremonies took place throughout Grey Highlands at cenotaphs and war memorials in Flesherton, Markdale, Priceville and Eugenia.

War memorial in the Eugenia Falls conservation area.

In Eugenia, service was held at the Eugenia Falls Conservation Area featuring a poem read by Richard Bentham of Flesherton. A wreath was laid by Dr. George Vandenberg on behalf the community of Eugenia. Guests were invited to place their poppies on the wreaths. The black metal fencing was freshly painted and new gardens were created featuring native species from the area.

Wreaths laid at the foot of the war memorial.

The Highland Church in Eugenia held services Sunday November 10 where wreaths were laid on behalf of the Canadian Armed Forces, the Royal Canadian Legion and other organizations and regions.

In Chatsworth, services were held at the Legion on Garafraxa Street. In Southgate, services were held in Dundalk and Holstein and Mount Forest. In West Grey, services were held in Durham. Legion Members and guests were also invited to the Durham Legion for a light lunch immediately following the service. A Roast Beef Dinner was also planned for later in the day.

Many thanks to Royal Canadian Veterans and families from Chatsworth Legion Branch 464, Flesherton-Markdale Legion Branch 333, Dundalk Legion Branch 285, Durham Legion Branch 308 and Mount Forest Legion Branch 134 for their service and organization of Remembrance Day events in each community.

South Grey News does not have the resources of a big corporation. We are a small, locally owned-and-operated organization. Research, analysis and physical attendance at public meetings and community events requires considerable effort. But contributions from readers and advertisers, however big or small, go a long way to helping us deliver positive, open and honest journalism for this community.
