Parkinson Society Southwestern Ontario (PSSO) announces the annual Walk for Parkinson’s will occur on September 7 and 8 across fourteen walk locations. Walk for Parkinson’s supports and raises awareness for those living with Parkinson’s disease. All funds stay local, providing vital services and programs and funding research, education, and advocacy initiatives. In 2023, a record-breaking amount was raised of over $540,000 for the community.
Parkinson’s disease is a slow, progressive neurodegenerative disorder, making activities of daily living difficult for those with the disease. Primary symptoms include tremors, rigidity, slow movement, postural instability, and sleep disturbance. Many experience depression, anxiety, dementia, memory problems, and difficulty communicating. Young Onset Parkinson’s disease is on the increase with an estimated 5-10% of people being diagnosed under the age of 40. By 2030, the number of people with Parkinson’s disease is expected to double.
Walk for Parkinson’s is an opportunity for the community to unite to support those impacted by Parkinson’s disease in Southwestern Ontario. Participants may register online as an individual or as a team. Online registrations and donations are encouraged, however, PSSO accepts cash and cheques as well. Participants walk through some of the region’s most beautiful parks and recreational areas along a 1km – 5km route, or a distance of their choice. During and after the walk, participants enjoy fun activities, entertainment, and refreshments. For more information on registering or donating, please visit walkforpd.ca!
At South Grey News, we endeavour to bring you truthful and factual, up-to-date local community news in a quick and easy-to-digest format that’s free of political bias. We believe this service is more important today than ever before, as social media has given rise to misinformation, largely unchecked by big corporations who put profits ahead of their responsibilities.
South Grey News does not have the resources of a big corporation. We are a small, locally owned-and-operated organization. Research, analysis and physical attendance at public meetings and community events requires considerable effort. But contributions from readers and advertisers, however big or small, go a long way to helping us deliver positive, open and honest journalism for this community.
Please consider supporting South Grey News with a donation in lieu of a subscription fee and let us know that our efforts are appreciated. Thank you.
