The Township of Southgate is excited to launch its participation in Communities in Bloom (CiB) with the 2024 Miracle-Gro® Best Garden Selection program.

CiB is a “volunteer and partnership-driven charitable organization that uses a multi-tiered competitive evaluation process to foster community strength, involvement and continuous improvement. ”CiB’s volunteer judges tour communities across Canada, granting them scores of between one and five blooms based on the six categories of: community appearance, environmental action, heritage conservation, tree management, landscape, and plant & floral design.

On August 7-8, 2024, the Township of Southgate will participate in the program’s “evaluated category” to receive feedback on ways it can enrich its physical appearance, environmental sustainability, green spaces, and heritage conservation. Taking part in the CiB program will allow the Township to showcase community features that are a source of pride while receiving feedback on ways to improve its overall look and feel.

This year, the Township was selected to participate in the 2024 Miracle-Gro® Best Garden Selection program from Scott’s Canada. We invite residents and business owners to nominate themselves or another Southgate property to be recognized as a top garden in the community. The 12 winners will receive a sign to showcase during the Communities in Bloom judging tour that demonstrates that their property is a “Best Garden Selection,” a jug of Miracle-Gro® Shake N Feed All Purpose Plant Food (2.04 Kg), and a container of Miracle-Gro® Water Soluble All Purpose Plant Food (500g). Both flower and vegetable gardens across the Township are welcome to participate.

Nominate yourself or someone else by Friday, July 19, 2024. To do so, send a photo of the garden to economicdevelopment@southgate.ca with the address, name of the gardener (s), phone number of the gardener (s), and an explanation of why it should be a “Best Garden Selection.”

Timeline of the contest is as follows:

  • Nomination period: June 28 to July 19
  • Judging period: July 22 to July 26
  • Informing the 12 winners: July 29 to July 30
  • Lawn signs will be distributed, and photos will be taken August 1 to August 2
  • Communities in Bloom Judging: August 7 to August 8
