The Grey Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have laid several charges following a community complaint regarding overweight commercial motor vehicles.

On January 23, 2022, members from the OPP West Region Traffic Incident Management and Enforcement (TIME) team conducted enforcement efforts throughout the county after complaints were received from members of the public regarding overweight commercial motor vehicles.

In total, 34 charges were laid, and 10 warnings were issued. Below is a breakdown of those charge categories:

  • Overweight - 9
  • Brakes - 4
  • Cargo securement - 4
  • Daily inspection - 2
  • Vehicle Maintenance - 6
  • Other CVOR infractions - 6
  • Other HTA - 3

13 commercial motor vehicle inspections also took place, resulting in 4 commercial motor vehicles being put out of service due to major defects.

The Grey Bruce OPP would also like to share one occurrence of note, in which a loaded commercial motor vehicle was operating while over 40,000 kg overweight.

"When we talk about traffic enforcement, we often focus on the "Big 4" which includes distracted driving, aggressive driving, impaired operation and speeding. From this community response, it's very clear that overweight vehicles continue to pose a safety risk on our roadways. We will continue to work with our traffic safety partners to address matters such as this one, with the ultimate goal of improving roadway safety through education and enforcement," said Staff Sergeant Keegan Wilcox, Operations Manager Grey Bruce OPP.
