BY SOUTHGREY.CA STAFF — Hawthorn Cottages & Cabins is known for making memorable vacations on the shore of Eugenia Lake. Among its many amenities, the resort boasts amazing trout and large mouth bass fishing, a private and relaxing beach, picnic areas, various outdoor lounge areas, fire pits, horseshoe games, boat rentals and much more.
This year, Brian and Jayne LeGree celebrate their 10th year of ownership at Hawthorn's. "We would like to thank all our friends, new friends, family and all our forever vacationers for a very successful business resort," said the couple on their anniversary.
This well-known local vacation spot has a history tracing back to the 1950s. But the LeGrees have had their share of turmoil over the operation of a campground/trailer park on the adjacent property during their ownership. Denied their application to operate 13 campsites in 2018, they appealed the municipal ruling to the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) but subsequently lost.
The couple have recently applied again to amend the municipal bylaw regarding campgrounds at their location. On June 1, their application was received by Council but deferred pending the submission and acceptance of a Servicing Options Study for review and approval by the County of Grey and the Municipality of Grey Highlands. Currently, the Inland Lakes and Shoreline Designation does not recognize Resource Based Recreational Activities as a permitted use, and as such, this designation would need to be amended to recognize camping as a permitted use.
Despite setbacks with the campground, Brian and Jayne continue to run one of the most popular vacation rental businesses in the area. Over the years, they have invested a lot of money, upgrading facilities at the resort and remain environmentally conscious and dedicated to the safety and cleanliness of their operation. Congratulations on 10 years of success!
