June is Pride Month and marks the start of many events scheduled across Grey and Bruce Counties

June is Pride Month in Canada and marks the start of Pride Season, during which a number of events are scheduled across Grey and Bruce Counties. Grey Bruce Pride has distributed a list of collective 2S-LGBTQQIAP+ community events during June, including parades, flag-raisings, dances and more. A full list is available on their website. https://greybrucepride.squares...

Recognizing that June is also Indigenous History Month, Grey Bruce Pride has embraced the local Indigenous community. "Grey Bruce Pride are proud to say that half of our community group members are Indigiqueer individuals and it is important to us to continue to let our Two-Spirit Peoples guide our way," said group representative Rachel Peterson. "We demonstrate this in our Owen Sound Parade to ensure that they literally lead our parade."

One of the biggest events to hit this summer is the 3rd Annual Two Spirit Powwow happening in August at M'Wikwedong, lead by Two Spirit Youth.

According to Grey Bruce Pride, there is a dash between 2S and the remainder of the Pride group acronym, as not all Two Spirit Peoples consider themselves part of the Queer Community. The organization explains that the term "two spirit" is an ancient Spiritual Identity, with it's first written record of 900 BC. However, as they do not fit within the heteronormative, cisgender societal norms, they have been brought under the "Queer Umbrella" yet are separated with a dash, to acknowledge this distinction.

"It is important to ensure 2S comes first in our acronym as an act of reconciliation and acknowledgment of them being the first people's and leaders of these lands, said Paterson.

Of note for southern Grey County, Dundalk's Pride Parade will take place on Saturday, June 17.
