BY SOUTHGREY.CA STAFF — Easter Egg Hunts across Grey County kept kids and their dentists happy for another year.
It was a sunny, yet chilly Saturday in Durham as approximately 300 people showed up to watch and participate in the annual West Grey Durham Lion's Club Easter Egg Hunt.
Lion's Club president Kevin Eccles announced the race for approximately 15,000 individually-wrapped, chocolate eggs spread across the lawns of Spruce Ridge Community School. Divided into age groups of under-5, 5-8 and 9-and-above categories, kids scrambled to finish their hunt in only seven minutes.
Every year, the Lion's Club hosts this event at the school, not only purchasing the candy for the event but also cleaning up the fields beforehand. "Every year, it's like old home week," said longtime Lion's Club member Jim Aiken, as he described the community feeling he gets from hosting the Egg Hunt.
The Easter Bunny showed up early to lend support as did members of the West Grey Fire Department. Firefighters greeted kids and gave them a hands-on tour of one of their trucks.
In Markdale hundreds of parents and children crowded around age designated areas on the soccer fields near the Grey Highlands Fire Station waiting patiently for the countdown. The Easter Egg Hunt is organized by the Rotary Club and sponsored by Chapman's Ice Cream, Valley Home Improvements, Bowler & Company, PJ Knickerbockers, Grey County Real Estate & Dunwood Signs.
