BY SOUTHGREY.CA STAFF — In September, travel agency CheapOair revealed the top worldwide destinations for taking in the colourful fall foliage this season. The exclusive registry included many notable places in the U.S., Europe, Japan and Canada. But number one on the list is our very own province of Ontario! It should be no surprise to residents of Grey County, given the spectacular nature and gorgeous views of the Niagara Escarpment and surrounding rural landscape that we live along side.
While there are many optimum places to witness nature's glory, according to VisitGrey.ca, Beaver Valley in the municipality of Grey Highlands offers some of the prettiest fall views in Ontario and is an important route on their fall colour tour.
This past Thanksgiving weekend saw people flocking to our part of the province to enjoy the breathtaking autumn environment and snap up some family memories. The weather cooperated with warm, sunny skies on Sunday and similar conditions for the Holiday Monday, causing a mass exodus of city dwellers to the near north. Roads were busy and parking was at a minimum at popular spots like Eugenia Falls, Old Baldy and the Bruce Trail.
Unlike 2021, weather conditions this year have also conspired to make for a particularly amazing show of colour. Sean Thomas, a research professor specializing in forestry and environmental change, says that trees need to receive cool temperatures and high light in the fall at just the right time, in order to form red pigments that make the intense fiery hues of a picture perfect season.
SouthGrey.ca continues its tradition of showcasing Grey County at this time of year with the annual Fall Photo Contest. Readers are invited to submit up to three fall photos during the month of October for entry into the contest and a chance to win gift certificates from local businesses.
