OPP advise drivers to stay safe in the deep freeze and be prepared

Emergency kit and be prepared text.

A polar vortex has descended upon Southern Ontario, sending the region into a deep freeze.

That's why members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) West Region are warning drivers to be prepared to face intense cold, coupled with heavy snowfall forecast for northern parts of the region. Situations like being stuck in the ditch or stranded in a significant traffic backup due to a collision can become downright dangerous when the mercury plunges.

Here are some essential tips to ensure you stay safe:

  • Be sure to dress for winter even though you'll be in your car. You'll be protected if you become stranded.
  • Make sure your phone is charged.
  • Ensure your fuel tank is full before hitting the road. If you encounter a lengthy traffic delay, you'll need your vehicle's heater to stay warm.
  • Carry a winter driving survival kit in your vehicle. Recommended items include a shovel, blanket, warm clothes, food, water, booster cables, flashlight, high energy foods, matches and a candle.
  • Plan your trip before starting out. Visit the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) web site for road conditions at: www.511on.ca or Municipal 511 at https://www.municipal511.ca/.

For more winter driving safety tips, check out the Ontario Ministry of Transportation website: http://www.mto.gov.o n.ca/english/safety/winterdrive/winterdrive.shtml.

Motorists can contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 in a non-emergency or 911 in an emergency.
