Another successful fundraiser for the Markdale hospital

Huge Plant Sale poster

The third annual plant sale for Markdale hospital was a great success. The event is organized by Kimberly resident Bo Penny, and held at her family property in the Beaver Valley, affectionately named Penny Lane. In spite of rain, black flies and mosquitos — who obviously loved the weather — there was an excellent turnout.

This year, the goal was to purchase a SCI-FIT Bidirectional Upright bike at the cost of $5,439. Thanks to the support of the community, the Physiotherapy department of the new Markdale hospital will be getting a brand new SCI-FIT Bidirectional Upright bike.

The CGHSF had almost 2,000 plants to offer to their patrons. Most of these plants were grown in the Penny's own gardens, but they also received generous donations from the Pine Valley Greenhouse, Fairmount Fields Organics and Fiddlehead Nursery, as well from many volunteers and neighbours.

"We live in such an amazing community and it's heartwarming to see what we can achieve when we work together for the benefit of all," said Bo. "We also want to thank our wonderful volunteers — Lyn Roland and Jim Phelan, Dorothee Potter, Rosemary Morton, Kate Esplen, Kevin Drynan, and Linda, Elly Pennings and individuals who donated plants — our wonderful “Lillie Ladies” Frances and Alison from Thornbury, Christine Fry, Marylin Hammer, Joanna Cotton, Ann Hahn, Sharon O'Sullivan and Dale Beare."

The next Penny fundraiser is on Saturday June 1 will benefit Grey Highlands Public Library. "We hope for better weather and another large turnout. There are still lots of plants and our three local library branches need community support," said Bo.

At South Grey News, we endeavour to bring you truthful and factual, up-to-date local community news in a quick and easy-to-digest format that’s free of political bias. We believe this service is more important today than ever before, as social media has given rise to misinformation, largely unchecked by big corporations who put profits ahead of their responsibilities.

South Grey News does not have the resources of a big corporation. We are a small, locally owned-and-operated organization. Research, analysis and physical attendance at public meetings and community events requires considerable effort. But contributions from readers and advertisers, however big or small, go a long way to helping us deliver positive, open and honest journalism for this community.
