BY SOUTHGREY.CA STAFF — In July, the former Hospital site in Markdale next to the Pennywise store was broken into and several items were stolen, including copper pipe. The Pennywise Thrift Shoppe volunteers were told that there was no longer water available in the building and they have to close. The search for a new location made it to number 5 in our Top Stories countdown.
Brightshores Health System owns the former hospital building and Pennywise property. They had previously told the Centre Grey General Hospital Auxiliary that they had to find another location by August or September but the break-in forced an early closure of the site.
So the Auxiliary were thrown into a frenzy, looking for a new location for the Pennywise Thrift Shoppe.
In September, a new location in Markdale was found and Pennywise hoped to restart its operations in the near future. The store would relocate to 11 Main Street East in downtown Markdale — a space formerly occupied by the toy store Pj Nickerbockers. PJ Knickerbockers new location is at 10 Main St. W.
In October, the store was officially re-opened. The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries and community members. The Pennywise Thrift Shoppe has been fully stocked and continues to do well. A the money raised by the store goes to support the hospital in Markdale.
Since 1953, over a million dollars has been raised for the hospital by the Pennywise Thrift Shoppe.
“Pennywise has been an important part of Markdale ever since I can remember,” said Ashley Chapman, Chief Operating Officer of Chapman’s Ice Cream. “The dedication of the Hospital Auxiliary and its volunteers to helping the people of this community is incredible, and their contribution towards the hospital is invaluable. Donating to Pennywise is directly supporting our community, and we couldn’t be happier to help them with this transition.”
