Ruby Jubilee Bonspiel raises more than $3,000 for Women's Centre

2024 Ruby Jubilee Bonspiel cheque presentation

The Markdale Women’s Curling Club raised more than $3,000 for the Women’s Centre Grey Bruce (WCGB) during the inaugural Ruby Jubilee Ladies Bonspiel held on Saturday, November 23, 2024 at the Markdale Curling Club.

The cheque was presented by Bonspiel co-chair Heather Reed to the WCGB Fund Development and Communications Manager Stacey Barry on Monday, November 25, which coincided with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

Funds contributed to the WCGB were raised through a silent auction and a raffle comprising donations from 35 local businesses and eight individual contributors.

The Ruby Jubilee Bonspiel celebrated 80 years of ladie's curling in Markdale and 40 years since the Markdale Club has had a ladies' league. This year's event took a royal theme.

Over the course of the day, 64 women on 16 curling teams from Collingwood to Mississauga competed in two draws with two games plus lunch. The team from Stayner won the first draw and the team from Thornhill won the second.

The Bonspiel was co-chaired by Heather Reed (pictured left), Christine Mongeau and Kathy May. Stacey Barry, the Centre’s Fund Development and Communications Manager accepted the cheque.

The WCGB provides shelter, crisis intervention, safety planning, counselling and transition services for women, children and youth affected by abuse in Grey and Bruce counties. "Every six days in Canada, a woman is killed by her partner," said Stacey Barry. "6,000 women are living in shelters because they are no longer safe at home."

Reed said that money raised will help support WCGB programs, including Emergency Sheltering, Second Stage Transitioning and Youth at Risk.
